The winter weather is unpredictable this year, which is why it is important to always be prepared for the worst. As you gather your kids’ winter clothing and boots, do you have any precautionary items for your pets? If you have a pet, they are considered part of your family, and there are ways you can keep them safe during the winter time too.

According to The Chicago Tribune, when the winter turns from mild to frigid, this poses the risk of dogs and cats getting frostbite. The most susceptible areas are the tips of their tails and ears, especially for dogs with long ears, like Basset Hounds and Weimaraners. While most dogs wear their own winter coats, when it is below freezing, small dogs need some help to keep warm, so a coat or sweater is a good idea.

In addition, because canines perspire from their paws, balls of ice can form between their paw pads, which can be very uncomfortable. Therefore, booties are a good idea to protect their feet. Also, when the paws are unprotected, it may sting for a dog to walk on ordinary street salt. Consider alternative "pet friendly" salt. Not only is this type of salt gentler to a dog's paws, but it's also less damaging to concrete.

Some family cats or dogs live in garages, and some pets find their way into closed garages when a car is being warmed up. This is not a good idea to have your pet here because they can possibly suffer carbon monoxide poisoning, for it only takes 10 to 15 minutes for a 10-pound pet to die in a sealed garage with a car running.

Ponds, rivers, and lakes can be especially dangerous for pets in winter. When temperatures are around freezing, the ice may not be solid. Dogs are as susceptible to hypothermia like people and may die if they fall into freezing water. Therefore, always keep safety in mind, and then your winter can be full of enjoyment!
